Thermal Mirror FAQ’s

Legal Disclaimer: Statements regarding this temperature device and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or health condition

What is thermal technology and how does it work?

It functions by a heat sensor that detects temperature by recognizing and capturing different levels of infrared light. This light is invisible to the naked eye but can be felt as heat. All objects emit infrared radiation; a thermal camera captures the infrared radiation from what’s in front of it, creates an electronic image about the temperature differences and then reports the results. It became popular for temperature detection in 2003 due to the SARS epidemic, but it was prohibitively expensive for mainstream use. That’s now changed.

Is it a medical device?

No, it is not a medical-grade product. It's a high-end, non-medical temperature inspection product for non-contact temperature screening in public areas. By positioning the Thermal Mirror as a temperature inspection device, not a medical diagnostic device, consumer confidence can be secured without going through the unwieldy process of garnering FDA approval. *To note, Amazon and other similar companies have started using it as a screening method at their facilities, an indicator that it will soon pass muster for the mainstream.

What makes integrating it as part of the In Reality platform, even smarter?

Indeed, thermal camera technology is not new—there are certainly other solutions similar to the Thermal Mirror from a hardware perspective. They can all take a quick temp and indicate pass/go results via light or a short selection of audio response. They cannot, however, perform the advanced feature/benefits we make possible by integrating it with the InReality software platform. With the Thermal Mirror, you get the simple standalone contactless solution plus

  • Recognize
    • employees or persons of interest from a facial database, then create event log with store and forward from our Cloud Data Lake for an audit compliance logs
  • Customize the CX design
    • To reflect brand and corporate identity, design language, and contextually relevant content
  • Create anomaly alerts based
    • on deep learning and AI algorithms
  • Get results in real-time
    • based on metric views you choose, then test for optimal user experience
  • Network, update and synchronize in unison
    • Across all installation points
  • Quickly and easily connect
    • with other platform capabilities for a comprehensive view on multiple analytics

Can I easily document the temperature result for every recognized person/employee’s record?

The Employee Compliance Module provides access to all historic employee compliance and audit records, either as a PDF report or to be ingested into the client HR system (additional development cost may be required).

Should I have privacy concerns?

COVID-19 has opened the door to many new norms that have yet to be explored by privacy mandates or legal teams. Our solution requires that an image is taken to indicate the thermal results. It does not store those images, but in the case of employee tracking, it does associate it with a facial database. We recommend users establish a public-facing privacy policy and notify the visitor. For employees, they should work with both legal and HR teams to establish a disclosure document with transparency regarding image and data use and agreement to terms

How does the Occupancy Monitor work?

There are two options for monitoring your occupancy in real time, one camera-based and one via mobile detection.

  • Camera-based that counts people: Simply counts people coming in and out of the door and synchronizes the counts. Then, an algorithm aggregates the counts and sets alerts. Via our platform, it can also predict wait times and potential traffic counts for the next hour to help manage guest expectations. All the information is made available to share via digital signage, your website, mobile app, etc.—you choose.
  • Mobile Phone Sensing that counts devices: Counts smartphones as a proxy to the number of people who are in the location in real time. It’s done via a chip that tracks Wi-Fi mobile phone signals (even when Wi-Fi is disabled), with no login or any activation needed on the phone.

How do I indicate to customers the occupancy range?

If using the digital signage solution, it’s a lot like any other wait indication display. Customers walk up and can see some kind of visual indicating the current threshold and wait time. Our platform enables you to customize this, so rest assured that you can design the customer experience your way. The mobile option is sensing the larger space versus the entries, and it does so in the background. The metrics can be put into play and displayed as you wish.

Do I still need staff to monitor doors and floor activity?

This solution helps avoid dedicating staff to count people coming in and out at every entrance of each location. However, every situation is unique—you will want to design an operational process to support yours, as well as HR and Legal requirements.

What other benefits should I consider?

You can better schedule employee time allocation necessary to effectively monitor and manage occupancy. This saves cost, but also ensures better accuracy. Also, with our platform integration, the results and employee allocation data can be easily ingested into overarching Business Intelligence platforms in use.

What is the accuracy for both options?

No technology is 100%, but they are both great solutions for solid approximate counts. To note, the mobile sensor counts devices vs. people. So, it may see one person carrying a phone and tablet as two people. Or, a mom with 2 kids as one person. To manage this, an app is available that lets the venue manager easily override/adjust the counts in real time.

Any privacy concerns?

The cameras store no images--all images stay on the edge. Both the camera and mobile options are compliant with standard regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
